Bruce Mau Gave a Talk at Kent State // Nov 14, 12:31 AM

Last night, Bruce Mau talked about Massive Change at the Cartwright Auditorium on Kent State’s campus. Auditorium was pretty full but not really packed.

Just the fact that Mau was there inspires one to think and do more. He gives one a strange incentive to try going beyond. However, Mau only covered the familiar ground in his talk. If you’ve read Massive Change before, or seen the exhibit, or perhaps both, there’s probably little new information to digest. Luckily, Mau left ample time for questions, and I think there were some good ones. In particular “where does art fit into all this?” compelled Mau to provide a candid answer which many may have disagreed with.

Obviously, Mau has picked up some lessons from both Al Gore and Web 2.0. Firstly, he’s targeting college campuses more, and giving engaging presentations because he feels like this audience resonates the most with Massive Change. Secondly, Mau is announcing Massive Change 2.0 but he’s not yet sure what shape or form will it take. I think he’s titled it entirely appropriately for his target audience, though.

Lastly, one is always at loss to provide an answer to uninitiated when they ask who Bruce Mau is.

“He’s a designer.”
“Does he do posters, or?”
“No, he thinks outside the box. He tries to figure out what future of design will be. Things like sustainable development, economies, markets, transportation, living, energy, materials, image, information, etc…”
“Ohh!”
