Wayne McCutcheon gave a public lecture Thursday night at Michael Schwartz Center on Kent State’s campus.

McCutcheon is a principal of Entro Communications, who specialize is wayfinding strategies and signage programs. He is also on the board of directors of SEGD. He was very enthusiastic to be at Kent, and showed many of the projects listed on Entro’s website during his public lecture. Arizona Cardinals’ stadium, Toronto Pearson Airport, Seattle Public Library, and Salt Lake City Public Library being the most striking.

Wayne also went beyond simply presenting the projects he had completed, and talked about how and why successful wayfinding is successful and in comparison the ways in which ineffective wayfinding is bad with particular emphasis on colors, symbols, and words.

Wayne conducted a workshop the next day in our “University Wayfinding” seminar course. It’s rare to see an industry professional share the process as readily and successfully as Wayne did. What was apparent after the workshop was that there is no right answer to complex wayfinding problems. The best solutions seem to emerge from focusing on the process rather than the outcome. It was also compelling to reinforce the notion that campus wayfinding systems should be primarily designed for first-time visitors. Figuring their way around for current students is a part of what makes their their college experience.
